Dkron 1.0 and introducing Pro

Almost 4 years ago I started to write Dkron, like many things in life it was started as a result of necessity, I had a problem that I wanted to solve. It was shocking to me that there weren’t already other solutions with the same vision in the market, so I decided to try to build something that could solve the problem.

On March 12, 2015, Google published a whitepaper called “Reliable Cron across the Planet”, the paper made a lot of sense to me. Sometime later, a chapter about the same topic was included in the SRE Book

At the time I had some experience with Go (language) and I thought all the needed pieces were available to build a distributed, reliable Cron service.

I have the vision to make it easy and a joy to use, not overloaded with features but rock solid and lightweight. The early feedback I was receiving at the time was great and that motivated me to keep working on it.

Almost 4 years are quite a lot of time in the software industry, and I have been through all kind of ups and downs, ranging from heavy demotivation to hard working periods, but the problem I wanted to solve was still there, always.

Of course, I would not be here without the community, lots of anonymous people that contributed over the years, some of them specially, good professionals, that had helped me to build the best task scheduler in the market.

Of course, there are other compelling task schedulers in the market, but none of them are so lightweight and with the same slick experience as Dkron.

Introducing Dkron Pro

From the beginning when I took the conscious decision to start, maintain and grow an OSS I knew that it won’t be an easy path, and I always knew that if I wanted to keep on motivated and active I need to have a compensation for my work.

Dkron Pro includes several features that are sometimes needed by larger companies: things like security, more features, flexible options, and technical support.

Dkron Pro has been in testing in several companies during the preview. I want to thanks Geoff, Michael, and Oliver for testing it and giving tons of feedback that translated into fixes and improvements.

Also thanks to Jobandtalent, my current employer for trusting in me and Dkron since the beginning, we are happy users of it.

Starting from today, you can purchase Dkron Pro at https://dkron.io/

Final words

Releasing Dkron/Pro 1.0 is not the end of the journey, it’s just a milestone that marks the maturity of the tool, you can expect more features, more polishing and more support for the following releases.

I want to send special thanks to my supporting wife, that helped me care for the kids and home stuff, on countless working nights, and to the kids, that always encourage me to keep on working!

Dkron Pro 1.0 codenamed Roc-efeller is dedicated to my older son Roc.

Start using it is easy as:

docker run -d -p 8080:8080 --name dkron dkron/dkron agent --server
